National UAE reports that alleged fraudster Ramon Olorunwa better known as Hushuppi was recently denied bail after his lawyers argued that his work as an Instagram influencer allowed him to afford his luxurious lifestyle.
According to his lawyer, Hushpuppi was able to afford his $10,000 (N3.8 m) monthly rent for his Dubai apartment from the profits he received from his social media gigs.
The flamboyant man was extradited from Dubai to the US following his arrest, where he was accused of stealing millions of dollars and of trying to cheat an English Premier League club.
According to the same media, Hushpuppi made an appearance in a court in Chicago on Thursday where his lawyers sought to help him recover his freedom. The lawyers said the suspected fraudster will be forced to wear an electronic tag upon his release, and will live with a relative as well.
However, prosecutors argued that all Hushpuppi needed to commit a crime was a smartphone and good internet connection.
The Instagram celebrity was eventually denied bail by Judge Jeffrey Gilbert who watched proceedings from a prison video link.
Hushpuppi represented too much of a flight risk, according to Gilbert, so he will remain in detention until he is brought before a California tribunal.
