Austria Offers 196,000 Jobs for Nigerian Cooks, Plumbers, Carpenters, & other Foreign Talents

Austria is experiencing a notable increase in job openings, with an average of 196,400 unfilled positions reported in the first quarter of 2024

According to Statistics Austria, the development represents an 8.5% rise from the previous quarter’s 181,000 vacancies, indicating a growing demand for labour, especially in the service sector. 

This surge in job vacancies presents a significant opportunity for foreign professionals, especially in crucial roles such as nurses, plumbers, and carpenters.

About 196,000 Job Vacancies to Fill by Foreign Talents

Austria’s labour market faces significant shortages in various sectors, offering numerous opportunities for foreign professionals. The analysis of job vacancies in the country includes 113,200 openings in the service sector, 46,100 openings in the manufacturing sector, and 37,100 openings in the public sector.

The latest EURES report highlights several high-demand occupations: 

  • Service sector: Nursing professionals and cooks. 
  • Manufacturing and engineering: Electrical mechanics, motor vehicle mechanics, welders, and flame cutters. 
  • Construction and trades: Plumbers, pipefitters, carpenters, and joiners. 
  • Technical and engineering: Electronics engineering technicians and systems analysts. 

Visa Options for Nigerians and Other EU Countries

Austria offers several visa options for non-EU citizens such as Nigeria and other African countries aiming to work in the country. These visas cater to various employment needs, each with specific purposes, durations, and criteria. 

  • The D Visa (Long-term visa) is designed for non-EU citizens planning to work in Austria for more than 90 days.  
  • It requires an employment contract or job offer from an Austrian employer, proof of accommodation, sufficient financial means, and health insurance coverage. 
  • The Red-White-Red card visa is popular among highly skilled workers from non-EU countries.  
  • It combines a residence permit and a work permit, valid for up to two years. Applicants are assessed based on qualifications, work experience, age, and language skills. 
  • The European Union (EU) Blue Card is aimed at highly qualified non-EU citizens, the EU Blue Card allows individuals to work in Austria and other EU member states.  
  • It requires high educational qualifications, an employment contract with a salary at least 1.5 times the average gross annual salary in Austria, and proof of adequate health insurance and housing. 
  • The job seeker visa allows highly qualified non-EU citizens to stay in Austria for six months while seeking employment.  
  • Applicants must demonstrate their qualifications, relevant professional experience, financial means, and health insurance.

  • Austria offers competitive salaries, making it an attractive destination for skilled professionals. The average annual salaries for high-demand roles include: 
  • General Practitioners: €162,974 
  • Registered Nurses: €69,552 
  • Electrical Engineers: €75,384 
  • Automotive Mechanics: €43,001 
  • Plumbers: €53,688 

Document You Need for an Austria Visa

In order to apply for an Austria visa you need to prepare a few documents:

  • Passport/ Traveling Document. Your passport needs to have at least two blank pages and it needs to be valid for at least six months and issued within the last decade.
  • Visa Application Form. You need to fill this in and get it signed. You can find the form here. Make sure to follow the instructions on how to fill in the application form.
  • Recent Pictures. These photos need to follow the Schengen visa photo rules as set by ICAO.
  • Visa Fee. You need to pay a certain amount in order to apply for your visa. Visa Fee for D-Visa which is applicable for non-EU countries is 75€ – 150€ range
  • A Letter of Purpose. You need to present a cover letter, in which you should clearly state the reason for your visit.
  • An Itinerary. You must provide correct dates for your flights and your plans during the trip.
  • Travel Insurance. You must have Schengen travel insurance that covers any medical and emergency issues up to 30,000€.
  • Civil Status Documents. This can include birth certificates or your marriage license.
  • Proof of Accommodation. You need to provide your hotel reservation or proof for any other type of accommodations you’ve secured.
  • Proof of Financial Means. You need to provide proof that you have enough means to finance your travels to Austria.
  • Copies of Previous Schengen Visa. Applicable only if you’ve had a Schengen visa before.

The steps for applying for an Austria visa are:

  1. Make sure you have a clear idea of what type of visa you need. Even though the application process is the same, the required documents differ depending on the visa.
  2. Find an embassy/consulate or official representative of the Austrian government in your country.
  3. Call the embassy to set a date for your application.
  4. Prepare all the necessary documents.
  5. After you’ve prepared all the documents, hand them over at the embassy/consulate.
