10 killed, 3 injured as 18-year-old boy opens fire at supermarket in US

An 18-year-old boy, Payton Gendron has shot dead ten people and injured three in a black at a supermarket in New York.

According to CNN reports, the incident happened on Saturday in Buffalo, a black dominated area of New York, the most populous city in the United States of America.

It was gathered that eleven of the victims were black while the others are white.

Gendron, who was armed with an assault-style rifle and wearing body armour, was arrested after the shooting spree. Officials said he drove to Buffalo from his home in a New York state county “hours away” to launch the attack, which he broadcast on the internet.

Joseph Gramaglia, Buffalo police commissioner, while giving account of account of the incident said the suspect killed nine customers and a retired police officer working as an armed security guard.


“He exited his vehicle. He was very heavily armed. He had tactical gear. He had a tactical helmet on. He had a camera that he was live-streaming what he was doing,” Gramaglia said.

Stephen Belongia, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Buffalo field office, told reporters that the shooting is being investigated as “both a hate crime and a case of racially motivated violent extremism”.

President Biden reacting to the incident called for a thorough investigation of the shooting and said that the nation “must do everything in our power to end hate-fueled domestic terrorism.”

Biden said “we don’t need anything else to state a clear moral truth: A racially motivated hate crime is abhorrent to the very fabric of this nation.”

Gendron, as of press time, has been arraigned on a charge of first-degree murder, which carries a sentence of life without parole. He is being held without bail.
