A 17-year-old secondary school student, Terhemba Tyochivir has committed suicide after allegedly requesting his parents to change his school in Benue state.
The boy hung himself on Thursday afternoon around Akpehe area of Makurdi, the Benue state capital.
Sewuese Anene, the state police public relations Officer (PPRO), confirmed Tyochivir’s demise, saying that the incident was reported at the E Division police station.
The police spokesperson said the boy had requested his parents to change his school “back to Makurdi”.
Anene said although his sister’s request to change schools was granted, the parents were yet to accept his demand “and this happened”.
The police spokesperson added that an autopsy will be conducted to ascertain the cause of Tyochivir’s demise.
“It happened in Makurdi, Gboko road. He requested his parents to change his school. I think he is schooling in Gboko. He said they should change his school back to Makurdi and they were yet to do that. They did that for his sister and they were yet to bring him back and this happened,” she said.
“That is the only thing we know for now. There might be other challenges, maybe an autopsy will tell. An autopsy will be conducted to know the cause of the death.”
Tyochivir was confirmed dead at the Bishop Murray Hospital in Makurdi.
