2023: 18 PDP governorship candidates reportedly meet Wike over cold war with Atiku

No fewer than 18 governorship candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the coming 2023 general elections have met with Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State in a new attempt to resolve the impasse with the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Recall, since the party’s presidential primaries where Atiku emerged as the PDP 2023 Presidential candidate, some members who are not happy with the process and outcome have stayed off party affairs.

Contributing to the internal rancour was Atiku’s choice of Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, as running mate over Wike who was reportedly favoured by the committee saddled with that responsibility.

This did not go well with the Rivers state governor and his colleagues – Samuel Ortom (Benue), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu).

Wike, together with the aggrieved governors had reportedly met with presidential candidates of other parties including Bola Ahmed Tinubu of All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peter Obi of Labour Party.

The party elders have, however, been apprehensive that the activities of Wike and the governors of Oyo and Benue states, Seyi Makinde and Samuel Ortom, may negatively affect the PDP’s chances in the 2023 presidential election.

This made the National Working Committee of the party meet with PDP governorship candidates across the 36 states of the federation at its Wadata Plaza headquarters in Wuse, Abuja, on August 24, 2022.

The meeting was attended by all PDP governorship candidates except the Oyo State governor, who was out of the country when the meeting was held.

Meanwhile, in a bid to resolve the internal crisis in the party, the governorship candidates have reportedly stormed Wike’s personal residence in Port Harcourt.

The candidates arrived at the private home of the Rivers governor in Port Harcourt, the state capital, at 8 pm on Tuesday, September 6, 2022, for a closed-door meeting that lasted till about 11 pm.

The candidates in attendance include Kaduna, Plateau, Katsina, Nasarawa, Kebbi, Benue, Sokoto, Jigawa, Borneo and Yobe.

Others are, Kwara, Kanu, Lagos, Niger, Ogun, Cross River, Delta, and Rivers.

After the meeting, the Chairman of the PDP Governorship Candidates Forum and Governorship Candidate of Kaduna State, Isa Ashiru, told journalists that they are hopeful the discussion with Wike, which comes a few days after their meeting with the Presidential Candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar, will go a long way in resolving the internal crisis.

He said their next line of action is to meet with the National Working Committee of the party.
