2023: Setback for Tinubu as another top APC chieftain defects to PDP in Sokoto

The All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suffered another calamity as the immediate past Nigeria Ambassador to Jordan and chieftain of the APC, Faruk Malami Yabo, defected to the main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto state.

Malami announced his defection at a PDP rally in Yabo Local Government Area (LGA) of Sokoto State on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, and was joined by many of his supporters, who also decamped to the PDP.

He described his defection as a “homecoming”. “I have always been a PDP family and my defection today is like someone returning back home.

“I thank everyone who is part of this movement and I promise to help the party emerge victorious in the forthcoming general election,” he said.

Receiving Malami, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State commended the former envoy for joining the PDP.

Also speaking, the gubernatorial candidate of the PDP in Sokoto, Sa’idu Umaru, commended the people of Yabo local government for coming out in large numbers to receive the new party members.

This comes a day after Former lawmaker, Hon. Hassan Adamu Shekarau withdrew his membership from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The politician who represented Birnin Gwari/Giwa Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives confirmed his membership withdrawal in a letter dated January 3, 2023, that was reportedly addressed to his ward party chairman.

Shekarau cited personal reasons for his decision. The politician thanked members of the APC in Kaduna State who had supported him in times past.

However, it could not be confirmed yet which party the former lawmaker would join ahead of the forthcoming 2023 general elections.

“This is to convey to you my decision to resign as a member of the All Progressives Congress with effect from 3rd January 2023,” Shekarau noted in the letter addressed to the party
