JUST IN: Appeal Court sacks APC’s Yusuf Dahiru as Kaduna assembly speaker, orders rerun

The Appeal Court in Abuja has sacked Honourable Yusuf Dahiru Liman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the Kaduna State House of Assembly Speaker and ordered a re-run in 5 polling units.

Liman who represents the Makera constituency in the state’s assembly was sacked in a ruling delivered on Friday, November 27, 2023, by Justice O. O Adejumo, Justice A . O Oyetula, and Justice P. An Obiora

This comes after Hon Solomon Nuhu Katuka of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had filed a petition before the tribunal challenging the election of Liman.

The PDP candidate argued that there were gross irregularities regarding the election of the speaker, stating that he won the election.

In its ruling, the tribunal nullified the election of Liman on the 30th of September, 2023 and ordered a rerun in 42 polling units.

The polling units, it was gathered, are 37 PUs in Makera ward, 2 PUs in Barnawa ward, 1 PU in Kakuri Gwari ward, 1 PU in Television ward, and 1 PU in Kakuri Hausa ward, making it 42 polling units.

Dissatisfied with the judgement of the Tribunal, APC, Dahiru Liman, and INEC filed an appeal against the judgement of the Tribunal while filing a cross-appeal seeking an outright declaration.

However, the Appeal Court in its ruling dismissed the appeal by sacking the Speaker, ordered a rerun in 5 polling units, namely Barnawa ward PU 005 and 009, Kakuri Gwari PU 006, Television ward PU 022, and Kakuri Hausa ward PU 045.

As it stands now, the votes are APC 17,470 and PDP 17,088. The court ruled that it was nullified on the margin of lead 382, which was less than the number of PVCs collected in the above polling units.

The State Police Commissioner, Usaini Gumel, who disclosed this while speaking to newsmen on Monday, said the command had arrested seven suspects, and they would soon be charged in court.

He said some faceless groups who claim to be traders are gathering at some points of the state, including some local government areas, assuring that the command is on top of the situation.

He said, “Intelligence reports at our disposal show that these so-called traders are using religion to perpetuate their acts.

“Some patriotic Nigerians, came to us from Bebeji, Wudil and some other areas, reporting that some people are hiding under the guise of reading the Quran in the names of prayers, and already we have sent our men and dispersed them,” he said.

Gumel expressed worry that the groups were trying to stir emotions against the police by speculating that they harassed women while dispersing them.

“These faceless groups are planning to send negative messages through the social media and traditional media against the Police and they are putting pressure to achieve their bad intentions,” he added.
