The Court of Appeal sitting in Sokoto state has affirmed Dauda Lawal-Dare as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections.
The court in its ruling on Friday, January 6, 2022, thereby set aside the judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in Gusau, the state capital, which had earlier disqualified Lawal-Dare.
Recall that in November 2022, a federal high court sitting in Gusau, Zamfara state, nullified the election of Dauda Lawal as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP
The Federal High Court had also declared in its judgement that the PDP had no candidate for the said position in the forthcoming election in the state.
In September, the court nullified the previous primary that elected Lawal-Dare following a suit filed before by Ibrahim Shehu and two other aspirants challenging the credibility of the primary.
The court ordered a re-run but Lawal-Dare emerged winner at the re-run also in September.
A former federal lawmaker, who also contested for the election, Alhaji Ibrahim Shehu Gusau, had approached the court seeking the nullification of the PDP primary election won by Dare, citing gross irregularities.
However, the state legal adviser of the PDP in the state, Barrister Bashir Abubakar Masama, while reacting to the first judgement said the party would study the judgment and take the next line of action, adding that the ruling would be appealed.
Addressing newsmen after the ruling, Ibrahim Aliyu, counsel to the plaintiffs, expressed satisfaction with the verdict, describing it as a victory for Democracy.
