Senator Dino Melaye has been declared the winner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial primary in Kogi State.
The lawmaker who represented Kogi West Senatorial district scored 313 votes to defeat his closet rival Idoko Ilonah who scored 124 votes in the election held in Lokoja on Sunday, April 16, 2023.
Awoniyi Sunday came distant third with 77 votes, followed by Musa Wada with 56 votes.
A total of 27 individuals had picked up Expression of Interest forms to contest in the primary elections.
The primaries featured several notable personalities aside the former senator, including former deputy governor of the state Yomi Awoniyi, and former senator Attai Aidoko. Others who also contested include Kebiru Usman, Abdullahi Haruna, Zakaria Alfa, Musa Wada, Bolu Femi, and Idoko Idah.
There were reports earlier in the day that former Vice President and PDP presidential candidate in the last election, Atiku Abubakar, is backing Dino Melaye for the governorship position, while the governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, is supporting Idah.
In a related development, a legal practitioner and prominent businessman, Barrister Adejo Okeme has won the Labour party governorship ticket for Kogi election.
Barrister Okeme polled 127 votes ahead of his closest rival, AVM Isaac Alfa who scored 69 votes at the primary held on Saturday in Lokoja, the state capital.
Barrister Okeme is from Kogi East Senatorial district.
Prior to the commencement of the Election Barrister Okeme had told journalists that tackling unemployment and prompt salary payment would top the list of his priority projects if given the chance to become the governor of the state on January 27th 2024.
Okeme also said that his administration would not joke with the issue of security without which no business can thrive anywhere
“I am a businessman and I know fully well that you need a conducive atmosphere for business to thrive and therefore, I will not joke with the issue of security.”
