BREAKING: Nigerian police ban open street carnivals during Christmas, new year celebrations in Osun

The Nigeria Police Force (NPA), Osun State Police Command has outlawed youth and street carnivals during Christmas and New Year celebrations in the state.

This was contained in a statement signed by the command’s spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, on December 20, 2022.

The command said it was acting upon intelligence made available to it which suggested that miscreants, under the guise of street carnivals, planned to cause mayhem.

However, it urged all organisers of carnivals to hire or use gated compounds to celebrate their festivals.

The statement reads in part; “Intelligence availed the Command suggests that miscreants under the guise of street carnival plan to carry out mayhem; as such, the Command is using this forum to inform the general public that streets carnival will not be tolerated in whatever form or guise.

“Therefore, all organizers of carnivals are enjoined to hire halls or use gated compounds to carry out/celebrate their festival.

“Parents/guardians are equally warned to advise their children/wards to desist from any act that could jeopardise the peace of this season.”

“The residents of the state are advised to go about their legitimate business and celebrate peacefully, the command also warned that anyone caught or found wanting would be made to face the full wrath of the law,” the statement added.
