JUST IN: PDP Assembly candidate dies after attending new year event in Plateau

Mattew Akawu, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 election in Pengana State Constituency is dead.

Akawu who was billed to fly the party’s flag in the 2023 State Assembly election was said to have attended a new year event in the constituency on Wednesday, January 4, 2022.

A family source confirming the politician’s death said; “He then said he wasn’t feeling fine on his return home, his situation deteriorated and he was taken to the hospital.

“Unfortunately, he died in the early hours of Friday”, the source confirmed.

Also speaking, the Publicity Secretary of PDP in the State, John Akans, confirmed the demise of the candidate.

“Yes we are aware of the death of our candidate for Pengana State Assembly constituency but the party will issue a statement on that, that’s all I can tell you”.

In a related development, a photojournalist Femi Adebesin-Kuti, is dead. Adebesin-Kuti until his death, he was the photo editor of the Guardian Newspaper.

Details surrounding his death are sketchy, but he reportedly died after a brief illness. His demise was confirmed on Friday by the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ).

n a statement by the NUJ Lagos State chairman, Adeleye Ajayi, the union condoled the family of the deceased and the Photojournalist Association of Nigeria.

“We received the sad news of the passing of our dear brother, Femi Adebesin-Kuti, Photo Editor of the Guardian Newspapers which occurred in the early hours of today with great shock.

“We pray that God in his infinite mercy will uphold and stand by his immediate family and friends at this trying time as we sympathise with members of the Guardian Newspapers Chapel and the entire PJAN family.

“May God continue to protect the rest of us and show up for us in our time of need,” the statement read.
