Six injured as church collapses during service in Lagos

No fewer than six members have been injured when a Deeper Life Bible Church, located in the Iragbo community in Badagry, Lagos State, collapsed.

The building collapsed following a heavy storm on Sunday while the service was ongoing.

The incident adds to the rising cases of building collapse in the country’s commercial nerve centre. Last year, a high rise crumbled in Lagos State, killing scores and injuring others.

Also speaking, Thomas Agodi, the Baale of Iragbo community, said he was inside his palace when a resident came to inform him that the church building had collapsed.

“We have to thank God that there is no fatality as a result of the collapse,” he said.

Experts have identified quackery, substandard building materials, pilfering, and faulty non-adherence to designs among others as reasons for the recurrent cases of building collapse.

A member of the church identified as Topohozin Tunde, who is also a victim told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that those who were badly injured have been taken to the General Hospital in Badagry for treatment.

He said, “I also sustained a serious knee injury, but thank God no life was lost.

“Just around 9:30 this morning, during the church service, there was a heavy storm which hit the church building, and before we could know what was happening, the whole church building collapsed.

“Some were able to escape, while about six of us sustained serious injuries.”

“Those that were seriously injured were taken to the General Hospital in Badagry for proper attention.

“Since my injury is not much, I decided to take care of myself,” he said.

Also speaking, Thomas Agodi, the Baale of Iragbo community, said he was inside his palace when a resident came to inform him that the church building had collapsed.

“We have to thank God that there is no fatality as a result of the collapse,” he said.
