JUST IN: Tension as missing Fulani leader is found dead in Plateau

A Fulani leader, Umar Ibrahim, who went on Wednesday has been found dead in an abandoned well in the Jokom community of Mangu town in the Mangu local government area (LGA) in Plateau.

Before his death, the deceased was the Ciroma of the state’s Kumbun district of Mangu LGA.

The spokesperson of Operation Safe Haven, a security task force maintaining peace in the state, Captain Oya James, confirmed the incident.

According to the leadership of the Gan Allah Fulani Development Association (GAFDAN), the deceased had gone missing when he left a hospital on Wednesday to buy food for his sick wife, who was on admission.

Garba Abdullahi, state chairman of the group, explained how the body of their leader was recovered.

“He visited his wife at the sickbay in Mangu. Around 6 pm on Wednesday, he went out to buy food for her but couldn’t return.

“After searching for four days, the body was found in an abandoned Well close to the hospital. The corpse was recovered together with soldiers attached to Operation Safe Haven who have been maintaining peace in the area.

“We are calling on all our members to remain calm and never take laws into their hands. We should continue to be law-abiding. The security agencies are doing their best. We are calling on the security to fish out the perpetrators of the dastardly act and bring them to book,” he said.

In a related development, operatives of Edo State Police Command have recovered a fully loaded military service pistol from a 28-year-old man, Abubakar Abdulrahman.

The suspect was arrested at his residence in Bieneja Community, South-Ibie, Etsako West local government area of the State.

According to the Command’s Spokesman, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, the suspect was arrested with the Para Pistol with breach No. TH10518 and 13 rounds of 9mm live ammunition on 5 November, 2023.

According to him, detectives at the firearms section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), acted on credible intelligence, stormed the suspect’s residence, arrested and recovered the firearm from him.

“The suspect made statement and confessed that he stole the pistol and its ammunition from the house of a retired Colonel from the Nigeria Army who is currently based in United States of America on medical vacation.

“The suspect will soon be charge to court,” Nwabuzor said.
