Tinubu’s government approves N25,000 special allowance for Nigerian doctors amid ongoing strike

The Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved has approved the payment of an accoutrement allowance of twenty-five thousand naira (N25,000:00) per quarter to medical and dental doctors in hospitals, medical centres and clinics in the Federal Public Service.

A circular signed by the Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, Ekpo Nta stated that the allowance is to be paid from the overhead budget and the approval takes effect from 1st of June 2023.

The letter read, “The Federal Government has approved the payment of an Accoutrement allowance of twenty-five naira (N25,000.00) per quarter to Medical and Dental Doctors in hospitals, medical centres, and clinics in the Federal Public Service. The allowance is to be paid from the overhead budget.

“The approval takes effect from June 1, 2023. All enquires relating to this circular should be directed to the Commission.”

It was gathered that the release of the circular regarding the allowance may not be unconnected to the ongoing indefinite strike embarked on by members of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD).

BREAKING NEWS

The resident doctors started the ongoing total and indefinite strike on Wednesday, following the federal government’s failure to meet its demands.

The doctor’s major demands are Immediate payment of the 2023 MRTF; Immediate release of the circular on one-for-one replacement; Payment of skipping arrears; Upward review of CONMESS in line with full salary restoration to the 2014 value of CONMESS; and Payment of the arrears of consequential adjustment of minimum to the omitted doctors.

Other major demands include Reversal of the downgrading of the membership certificate by MDCN; Payment of MRTF, new hazard allowance, skipping and implementation of corrected CONMESS in State Tertiary Health Institutions; and Payment of omitted hazard allowance arrears.
