Nigerians have reacted to the declaration of a 40-year-old Ibadan-based Islamic cleric, Olasupo Akinola, to run for president in the 2023 general elections under the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).
The cleric who on Sunday declared his intention to become Nigeria president claimed that God directed him to contest the post, saying Nigerians were living in abject poverty, hence the need for a God-fearing leader to emerge.
Aside Olasupo Akinola, others who have shown interest to contest for president under the APC are: Ex-Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu; Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo; Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; and Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige.
Others are Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, his counterpart in Ebonyi, Dave Umahi, former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, former Senate President, Ken Nnamani and others.
His declaration came some days before the APC at an National Executive Council (NEC) emergency meeting released prices for nomination forms ahead of its primary elections.
According to APC, expression of interest form for presidential aspirants is N30 million while the nomination form will cost N70 million.
While N50 million is approved for the governorship ticket, for both nomination and expression of interest forms. Senate and House of Representatives aspirants are to pay N20 million and N10 million respectively.
Also, aspirants for state legislative seats are to pay N2 million for both forms. However, a per cent discount is approved for candidates less than 40 years and free tickets for women and persons living with disabilities.
The Ibadan-based cleric speaking exclusively in a video interview with BBC Yoruba on the reason while he has declared his intention to run for president in 2023 said he first received revelations to rule Nigeria 20 years ago while he was an undergraduate.
He explained that God asked him to bring stabilization to Nigeria, adding that if he emerged as Nigeria president he will ensured that everything is fine within one year by providing adequate security, social amenities, among other things.
Olasupo said: “I am not contesting for money or any worldly things. All we need is fear of God. God said he wanted to use me, that I have to go back into politics. It is only person with divine knowledge that can rule Nigeria, and I am very vast in that aspect. If I emerged as the president within one year, I will stabilize the country. I will tackle insecurity, so that there can be love and peace, for those are the things that make development of a nation to strive.
“I am not asking to get into the position by force, I want Nigerians to pray over it, if I am the one, they should vote for me. If it is God that call me, I will be the president,” he said.

Nigerians reacting to Olasupo Akinola’s presidential ambition said they will vote for him if he can pick up the N100 million APC presidential form.
Hafsat Osioyemi wrote: I will vote for you jare because I am tired of all the one foot in the grave that didn’t know how to rule. Since Nigeria is going to suffer by voting for Tinubu in 2023 anyway I rather vote for one of our youth.”
Olawale Okeola Walesman said: “Do you have 100 million Naira? Go and pick the form, then we will take you serious.”
Uztaz Monsur Abiola Sulola wrote: “Go and buy form first, so that we can get prepared for campaign.”
Kola Ojo wrote that: “If truly you are called by God to do it, you we get there, please don’t use religion if you want to get there, dress like an educated man. And come out as a youth, God had spoken for some years back that it is youth that we change this country, so I will vote for you as a youth. So keep up the good work.”
However some reacted that the presidential aspirant must be a joker and he went too far for saying he is following directives from God.
Adekunle Gbadamosi wrote: “Where will he gets 100m and if he’s less than 40 that will be 50m. Nigerians play too much jare.”
Sanusi Olatunji said: “This one said God instructed him, what a joke of the month. I hope he knows how much is the form shaa…”
Oluwaniphemi Amos Williams said: “God, please have mercy on God. Because the way people are using God’s name for themselves is 10000000000 much. Instead of saying (my thoughts or I’m wishing) to be….. No, they are to hook God’s word and his name because they know that is the only way to get away with whatever they say. I Come in peace.”
APC sales of forms will commence on April 23 and will run until May 6, 2022. While the primary elections for governorship, senate, house assembly and house of reps have been scheduled, the date for the presidential primary is unknown.
