Mixed reactions have trailed a poster showing the former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Usman Alkali-Baba, indicating his interest in the Yobe Senatorial district primaries.
The now-viral poster which emanated on Saturday, August 12, 2023, showed Alkali-Baba with the slogan Gobe Ta Allah Ce loosely translated as ‘tomorrow belongs to God.’
It is nderstands that the former police boss may be seeking to contest in the Yobe South senatorial district election under the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC) following the resignation of the current senator, Ibrahim Geidam to become a minister.
Recall that Geidam, who is the serving senator representing Yobe East Senatorial District in Yobe State, was among the second batch of ministerial nominees forwarded to the red chamber by President Bola Tinubu last week.
Alkali-Baba was sacked by Tinubu in June after approving the immediate retirement of all Service Chiefs, and Advisers.
The poster of the former IGP vying for a senatorial position have stirred mixed reactions amongst Nigerians on social media.
While many questioned if the former police chief was a card-carrying APC member while in office for it to be easy for him to be showing interest in running for a political post barely three months after his retirement. Others said he is no more in active service and since he is a Nigerian, there is no crime in seeking a political position.
@Timiglow said; “If Nigerians don’t come against all forms of criminal gangs of APC and destroyed its entity, APC will buried that country finally with countless corruptions and consequential failures.”
@aai_austin wrote; “Just retired not up to 3 months and he’s running under APC already?”
chriswolex wrote: “That is the main problem of this country, cos all institutions that needs to be independent are political afflicted.”
@salishfman said; “So is it a crime for an ex officer (rtd) to join politics. This isn’t news at all.”
