Igboho has been out of Nigeria since 2021 when he eloped to Benin Republic after he was declared wanted by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Igboho, who was released in March 2022 to get medical attention on the condition that he would not leave the West African country, has remained confined within Cotonou, the Benin Republic capital.

He lost his mother on Saturday 22nd of July 2023 while still confined in Cotonou.

He regained freedom after two years of trial by the Beninese government in October 2023.

In a statement released after his freedom, Sunday Igboho praised former president Olusegun Obasanjo; nobel laureate Wole Soyinka; Professor Banji Akintoye; Ayo Adebanjo and several traditional rulers for the roles they played in securing his release.
