Ademola Lookman scored twice as Nigeria beat Cameroon 2-0 to advance to the quarter-final of the ongoing AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.

Nigeria advanced to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals with a  comfortable victory over their long-time rival Cameroon.

Ademola Lookman was the man who sealed the spot in the last eight, scoring early and adding a second late in the match.

Cameroon were unable to break through Nigeria’s defence, as the Super Eagles maintained their hopes of AFCON glory.

The former Everton, Fulham, and Leicester midfielder scored once in each half to help the Super Eagles advance to the quarterfinals.

Cameroon survived an early scare when Semi Ajayi’s effort was ruled offside by VAR.

Victor Osimhen played Lookman through in the 36th minute, and his shot went past goalkeeper Fabrice Ondoa, who was chosen over Manchester United’s Andre Onana.

Nigeria, boosted by the lively Osimhen, continued to create chances after the restart, with Lookman’s free kick agonisingly whistled over the bar.

Jose Peseiro’s team suffered a setback due to goalkeeper Stanley Nwabili’s injury in the 75th minute, as he did not make any saves.

Vincent Aboubakar, the Golden Boot winner in 2021, was introduced for his first appearance of the tournament, but with just over 10 minutes of normal time remaining, the Cameroon striker had no influence.

Lookman sealed the victory with a neat finish from Calvin Bassey’s cross in stoppage time, and Nigeria can now look forward to a meeting with Angola.Z

Two goals for Ademola Lookman are enough for him to win the Match of the match award.

Nigeria will play the Giant Sable Antelope of Angola in the AFCON 2023 quarterfinals by 6 pm, at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium, Abidjan, on Friday, February 2, 2024.
