The match between the two strong sides ended in a 1 – 1 draw at full time, forcing them into extra time and then penalties.
They both proceeded to score 10 – 10 penalties each with the final decisive penalty kick falling to the keepers, the Villarreal keeper who took the first penalty spot scored his comfortably but unfortunately for Manchester United, keeper De Gea saw his penalty kick saved by the Villarreal goalkeeper Rulli.
