Cristiano Ronaldo Premier League goals record beaten by Sadio Mane

Sadio Mane was once again Liverpool’s match-winner after his brace downed Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

The Senegalese forward opened his account for the 2020/21 Premier League season with a double that handed the Reds a 2-0 victory over Frank Lampard’s side.

Mane’s first of the game arrived five minutes after the interval when he headed home Roberto Firmino’s cross before his second came four minutes later when the attacker pounced on an error from Kepa Arrizabalaga.

As a result of the forward’s brace at Stamford Bridge, he has now scored more Premier League goals than Cristiano Ronaldo.

The former Southampton man has now netted 86 times in 196 top-flight games, compared to Ronaldo’s 84 goals from the same amount of matches for Manchester United.

Mane is also only the third Liverpool player to score a Premier League brace at Stamford Bridge, after Steve McManaman in December 1995 and Philippe Coutinho in October 2015.

Speaking after the game, former Reds defender Jamie Carragher compared Mane to Liverpool great John Barnes.

He told Sky Sports: “He’s an absolute superstar. He’s one of the top left-sided players in world football, certainly. I love him and I always go back to him as being Jurgen Klopp’s first major signing.

“I loved John Barnes, and he’s always in Liverpool’s best XI. I think when Mane finishes, that is a serious discussion and I can’t believe I’m saying it.

“But what that man has done, he’s going to be pushing Barnes for the all-time Liverpool XI for me”.
