Gerard Pique has accepted to take a massive pay cut to assist Barcelona in registering its new players following the current Catalan financial crisis.
Barcelona has brought in Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Jules Kounde, Frank Kessie, and Andreas Christensen while they also renewed the contract of Ousmane Dembele.
The Spanish giants have failed to register any of these players for the upcoming season after failing to meet La Liga’s regulations due to their financial troubles.
According to a report by Tribuna, Gerard Pique has agreed to cancel his current contract with Barcelona and sign a new one with a massive pay cut to help the club to register its new players.
After Barcelona’s attorneys discovered “evidence of crime” in the contract signed in 2020 while Bartomeu was in control, the club requested that Pique, De Jong, Ter Stegen, and Lenglet nullify their current contracts and return to their previous ones.
Josep Bartomeu retaliates to Barcelona’s claim about his ‘illegal contract extensions’ in 2020
Meanwhile, former Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu has hit out at the allegations made by the club’s current board questioning the legalities of the contract extensions signed under him.
Bartomeu claims Barcelona’s accusations are without merit as the contract extensions given to the players had been approved by the club’s attorneys and outside auditors Barca Universal reports.
Barcelona had claimed that there was an element of ‘criminality’ involved in the extensions signed by Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Frenkie de Jong, Gerard Pique, and Clement Lenglet, which makes them null and void.
The contract extensions that were handed out saw the players agree to reduce their salaries in the short term, with ridiculous pay raises included for the latter part of their deals.
