Lewandowski scored another brace as Barcelona won a comfortable 3-0 against Elche, puts pressure on Real Madrid as they are back at the top of the League.
An early red card shown to Elche captain Gonzalo Verdu only made things easier for Barcelona, who remain undefeated on the season with five straight wins following a season-opening 0-0 draw.
if Real Madrid were defeated by Atletico Madrid in Sunday’s Madrid derby, that means the Blaugrana will be the La Liga leader entering October after the upcoming FIFA international break.
Lewandowski opened the scoring with a clinical goal about 10 minutes before the halftime break, with an easy tap-in of a cross by Alejandro Balde, who was active in attack.
Memphis Depay doubled the advantage just before the break with a solo effort. He received the ball in the box with his back to goal, and then spun his defender and fired into the roof of the net for a spectacular finish.
Robert Lewandowski made it 11 goals in nine games for Barcelona with a double to down ten-man Elche and send his team to the top of LaLiga.
The compeition’s leading scorer found it a lot easier to beat Elche keeper Edgar Badia than he had Manuel Neuer in midweek, and the strugglers were an even softer touch after an early sending off reduced them to 10 men.
With eight goals in six games in La Liga and three in two in the Champions League he is up and running at the same scoring rate that saw him hit the half century mark last season. No one will be surprised if he hits the same heights in his first season at Barcelona.
On 70 minutes Elche were spared more Lewandowski punishment when he was taken off. Barça had racked up 500 passes to Elche’s 100. This would have been a one-sided game in any circumstance but with the sending off Elche’s job became impossible.
Lewandowski’s replacement was Ansu Fati so it was hardly a sign of things getting easier for Elche but Barcelona were cruising into the international break at this point and so the margin did not widen although both Fati and Ferran Torres had chances.
Elche had not managed a single chance in the entire game until Ter Stegen held a tame header from Carlos Clerc on minute 89. Barcelona found out in midweek that they still have lessons to learn in Europe but at home in La Liga they look invincible.
Real Madrid will go back to the top if they win their derby with Atletico on Sunday but for now it’s Xavi’s team out in front and no one with more goals than their number nine.
‘How can we play Barcelona at the Camp Nou with 10 men,’ said Elche’s Gerard Gumbau on the final whistle.
Barcelona’s goal difference is now 18-1. ‘We have good players and lots of firepower up front,’ said Ronald Araujo. ‘We are happy with the start we have made.’
Barcelona will travelled to Mallorca on Oct 1 after the international break, before proceeding to Italy for their Champions League tie with Inter Milan .
