Lionel Messi needs just 28 goals to break Inter Miami’s all-time goalscoring record

Lionel Messi, who is currently the all-time leading scorer for Barcelona and Argentina, is only 28 goals away from becoming the all-time leading scorer for Inter Miami.

Messi finished his incredible career with Barcelona with 672 goals in 778 appearances, and his goal for Argentina against Australia in China last month was his 103rd for La Albiceleste.

Messi made an impressive debut for new club Inter on Friday night, scoring an incredible 94th-minute free-kick winner against Cruz Azul at the DRV PNK Stadium.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner made his Leagues Cup debut alongside long-time teammate Sergio Busquets early in the second half and made an immediate impact.

Messi, who has been named Inter’s captain by manager Gerardo Tata Martino, is set to make his Herons debut against Atlanta United in the next cup match on Wednesday.

He’ll be looking to add to his Inter tally, and you get the impression he’s got another record in mind.

That’s because Messi needs to score 28 more goals in an Inter jersey to become the club’s all-time leading scorer for the third time.

Messi’s compatriot and former Argentina teammate Gonzalo Higuain holds the current record, and he was one of Inter’s marquee signings in September 2020.

The former Real Madrid, Juventus and Chelsea striker hit 29 goals in 70 appearances before retiring last year.

Second on the list is current Inter forward Leonardo Campana, who is the only other player in history to record double figures for David Beckham’s franchise.

The Ecuadorian, who Messi gave tickets to for his unveiling event, has scored 16 goals.

Lewis Morgan of Scotland and Rodolfo Pizarro, who took Messi’s place as a designated player, are tied on seven goals.

Messi’s new teammates Josef Martinez and Robert Taylor have each scored six goals, matching Ariel Lassiter, Brek Shea, and Robbie Robinson.
