Marcus Rashford scored twice as Machester United came back to defeat Omonia Nicosia 3-2 in Europe League on Thursday Night.
Manchester United avoided an embarrassing result as they came back to beat Omonia Nicosia 3-2 in Cyprus.
The hosts took the lead and went into the second half 1-0 up but Erik ten Hag made changes at the break and they paid off after just seven minutes.
Marcus Rashford equalised early in the second half before assisting the other substitute Anthony Martial to put United in the lead.
Ansarifard’s strike came against the run of play and United could feel very hard done by to be going in at the break a goal down.
But Ten Hag will be delighted with the impact made by his substitutions as Rashford and Martial sparked life into United’s attacking display.
Victory leaves the Red Devils, hammered 6-3 by Manchester City in the derby last weekend, three points ahead of third-placed Sheriff midway through the group stage. Omonoia remains bottom after losing all three matches.
Rashford’s introduction turned the game in United’s favour, the rejuvenated forward playing a part in all three goals.
He scored twice with his four shots, provided an assist and completed 94.1 per cent of his passes. The 24-year-old also had the third-most key passes (three) among United players despite only coming on at the interval.
Below are the highlights of the match:
Ronaldo meanwhile continued to struggle, his clearest opening coming when Diogo Dalot pulled the ball back to him eight yards out with Fabiano stranded, but somehow he contrived to hit the post.
Instead Ronaldo had to settle with an assist for United’s third and Rashford’s second, firing a low cross into the six-yard area for a tap-in.
Spirited Omonia were not done yet though, reducing the deficit almost straight away as Panayiotou turned a tricky bouncing cross home with his left foot.
United saw the game out, but remain second in Group E after Real Sociedad won 2-0 in Sheriff – meaning a play-off against a team dropping out of the Champions League to reach the knockout stages remains a possibility.
The two teams return to domestic action in this weekend, with United playing Everton on Sunday and Omonia playing AEL on Monday.
