Official: Chelsea signs Marc Cucurella from Brighton for £55m

Chelsea has confirmed the signing of defender Marc Cucurella from Brighton on a permanent deal worth £55m, plus £7m in add-ons.

Chelsea stepped in to secure the 24-year-old left-back, who is a left-back by trade but also impressed for Brighton last season in a left centre-back role.

After Manchester City refused to meet Brighton’s price tag of over £50m, Chelsea swooped in to secure the deal.

He follows the arrivals of Raheem Sterling from Man City (£47.5m), Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli (£33m), Gabriel Slonina from Chicago Fire (£12m) and Carney Chukwuemeka from Aston Villa (£20m) for a total expenditure of £172m so far.

“I’m really happy,” Cucurella said after signing a six-year contract.

“It’s a big opportunity for me to join one of the best clubs in the world and I’m going to work hard to be happy here and help the team.”

Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly added: “Marc is an elite defender of proven Premier League quality and he further strengthens our squad going into the new season.

“We continue to work on and off the pitch, and we’re delighted Marc will be a part of the present and future at Chelsea.”

“It helps for [fit-again] Ben to escape the pressure of ‘I have to deliver and we need you absolutely now’,” said Tuchel.

“We also have Marcos Alonso and Emerson but Marc is the option on this position and he can play very well in the back three.

“He has the profile of Azpi (Cesar Azpilicueta) with a left foot. He gives us many options.

“Ben is very ambitious, he couldn’t wait to come back to team training. It seems he needs a bit more time to adapt to the rhythm and physicality of the match itself, which is normal. It’s a demanding league, and we have to take care with him and not throw him in.”

In a separate deal, Blues academy graduate Colwill has moved to Brighton on a 12-month loan to help fill the void left by Cucurella.

Colwill shone on loan with Huddersfield last season and Brighton have managed to fend off interest from a number of Premier League sides to give him his first taste of top-flight action.

Marc Cucurella is expected to play his debut when Chelsea faces Everton at Goodison Park, on Saturday at 5:30 pm.
