Newcastle United have announce the signing of Italian international midfielder Sandro Tonali from AC Milan.
The Italy international has completed his move to St James’ Park in a deal that is understood to be worth around €70m.
Tonali has signed an initial five-year deal to the summer of 2028, although Newcastle have the option of extending it further.
His arrival represents a major coup for the Magpies, who persuaded him to turn his back on AC Milan even though he supported the club as a youngster and previously described his switch to the San Siro from Brescia as his ‘dream move’.
The 23-year-old is a full Italy international with 14 senior caps under his belt, and recently captained the Italian Under-21 side at the European Championships.
He made 130 Serie A appearances with AC Milan, and played in all 12 group and knockout matches as the Italian side made the semi-finals of the Champions League last season.
“First of all, I want to thank Newcastle United because they are giving me a huge opportunity for my career,” said Tonali, who is expected to be part of the Magpies squad that will travel to the United States for the Premier League Summer Cup later this month.
“I want to repay the trust on the pitch, giving it my all, as I always have. I’m really excited about playing at St. James’ Park, I can’t wait to feel the warmth of the fans.”
Eddie Howe made no secret of his desire to strengthen his central-midfield ranks this summer, with Tonali the kind of ‘marquee signing’ the Newcastle head coach said he was hoping to be able to make this summer.

The Italian has been pencilled in for a role at the heart of the Magpies’ midfield next season, with his presence potentially freeing up Bruno Guimaraes to adopt a more attacking role than the one he was performing for much of last term.
“I’m delighted to welcome Sandro to Newcastle United,” said Howe. “He is an exceptional talent and has the mentality, physicality and technical attributes to be a great fit for us.
“At 23, Sandro already has important experience as a key player in one of Europe’s top leagues and in the Champions League, as well as playing for his country.
“But he also has the opportunity and potential to grow and evolve with us, and I’m excited to add him to our squad as we approach the exciting season ahead.”
