Rodrygo equals former Barcelona Ace Lionel Messi’s record as Real Madrid wins the 2023 Copa del Rey on Saturday. 

Rodrygo scored twice for Real Madrid as the La Liga champions defeated Osasuna by a scoreline of 2-1 to lift the trophy.

Messi was the last player to score a brace for Barcelona in the final of the tournament.

The Argentina international and seven-time Ballon d’Or winner scored a brace against Athletic Bilbao in the 2020-21 final.

The Brazilian put the Spanish capital city team ahead in the second minute, but Osasuna equalized in the 58th minute thanks to Lucas Toro’s strike.

The game represented Osasuna’s second appearance in the Copa del Rey final, with the club last appearing in 2005.

Rodrygo scored his and Real’s second goal of the night with 20 minutes remaining when Toni Kroos’ deflected strike dropped pleasantly into his path, securing a hard-fought victory for his team.

Carlo Ancelotti won the competition for the second time, having led Real Madrid to Copa del Rey glory in 2014, his first major trophy at the club.

With five league matches remaining in the 2022-23 season, Real Madrid is 14 points behind rival Barcelona in La Liga. Ancelotti’s side, on the other hand, is still in position to retain their Champions League championship and has been drawn against Manchester City in the semi-finals.

The reigning European champions have already won the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup this season, in addition to the Copa del Rey.

Real  Madrid returns to action on Tuesday when they host Manchester City in the opening leg of their semi-final clash at the Bernabeu.
