Two-time champions Nigeria fought back to defeat South Africa 3-2 in Constantine on Saturday night to progress to the quarter-finals of the U17 Africa Cup of Nations in Algeria.

Abubakar Abdullahi scored the winning goal for the Golden Eaglets, who recovered from down twice to finish second in Group B behind group winners Morocco.

South Africa is third with three points and will be watching Group C outcomes on Sunday to see whether they can make the last eight as one of the two best third-placed teams.

The Amajimbos made a strong start, taking the lead after six minutes when Vicky Mkhawana shot low into the net after Waylon Renecke’s header from Gabriel Amato’s corner hit the post.

Nigeria, on the other hand, was continuously camped in South Africa’s half, forcing them to defend deep in search of an equalizer. One on one with the goalie, Abdullahi put the ball just wide, while Charles Agada had a goal disallowed for offside.

The pressure paid off in the 33rd minute, when Agada equalized with a header after a corner was flicked to his path at the back post unmarked.

South Africa retook the lead in the second minute of additional time thanks to some fantastic individual brilliance from Siyabonga Mabena.

The Mamelodi Sundowns forward picked the ball on the left before taking on two opponents and unleashing a belter that went off the underside of the bar and beyond the line.

In the 65th minute, Abdullahi snuck in between the two central defenders to extend a foot and drive Emmanuel Michael’s cross into the net.

Nigeria, as runner-up, will now face the second-placed team from Group C.
